Most of my days are busy in the same forgettable way most people are. Work, errands, the usual noise of getting through a day. So when I actually stop and take a breath, it doesn’t feel like nothing. It feels like a luxury.
Not an expensive one. A walk in the park. Seasonal ice cream from the shop nearby. Sitting on a bench long enough to actually notice the trees instead of walking past them.
It’s strange to call something that easy a luxury, but that’s exactly what it is. Not because it costs anything. Because most days I don’t give myself permission to do it.
A day doesn’t need to be special to matter. I don’t think every ordinary afternoon needs a reason or an event attached to it to count. Sometimes it’s just slowing down enough to actually be inside your own surroundings instead of moving through them on the way to somewhere else.
I won’t pretend I always feel the difference in the moment. Some days sitting on that bench just feels like sitting on a bench. But maybe in a few years I’ll look back and remember exactly how the ice cream tasted and the way the light hit the grass that day. Or maybe I won’t remember it at all. Either way, I gave myself the moment. That part already happened.
You don’t have to feel the luxury while you’re in it for it to have been one.
