I have a tumbler next to me right now. It’s not one of the expensive ones everyone seems to own. It’s a nine dollar tumbler that does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and it’s always within reach, on my desk, on my nightstand, wherever I actually am.
I didn’t always drink out of a tumbler. I used to use regular glasses, until my cat decided sharing was a good idea and started drinking out of mine. That’s genuinely how the tumbler happened. Not a wellness upgrade. A boundary with my cat.
It always has a lid and a straw. That part isn’t about the cat. My lips are prone to allergic reactions, so I drink everything through a straw now, water included. I wrote about the full story in My Lipstick Is Trying to Kill Me and I Refuse to Stop Wearing It, so I won’t repeat it here, but that’s the real reason behind the straw, not a hydration trend.
Past the tumbler itself, the habit that’s actually made a difference is smaller than people expect. A few times a day I just stop and ask myself when the last time I actually drank water was. Not guessed. Actually thought about it.
If you need to keep a log to remember, keep a log. It sounds excessive until you realize how easy it is to go four hours without a single sip and not notice. Set a reminder on your phone if that’s what it takes. There’s no prize for figuring out hydration through willpower alone.
None of this is glamorous. It’s a cheap tumbler, a straw, and a phone reminder. It’s also the only version of this habit that’s lasted longer than a week.
The habit that stuck wasn’t the expensive one. It was the one that fit an actual life, cat included.
